Come before the form? Astros vs. White Sox AL Wild Card Series Preview

No one will be happier than the Houston Astros when the second game of their Wild Card Series begins. Look, in the first game, they don’t have a win-loss record in the playoffs, so because they went 81-81 this year, they’ll have the worst record ever for the division title, and they’ll come early and often. This is so significant that we will no doubt hear about it throughout the games, but in the first game, it is going to be one of the main talking points. Houston would love nothing more than to leave that pedestrian regular season and get back to what the team usually does in October: marauding through the American League toward the World Series.

On the part of the Chicago White Sox, he would probably be lucky to live forever in the 2026 regular season. The writing started a year ago, they started to heat up and kept winning. While pundits expected the slow build to continue, their youth movement erupted into major league success much faster than expected. They led the AL Central further than any other team this season. They won 24 more games than they did last year, which was an improvement of 19 games the year before. Unless they win the World Series, the 2026 White Sox will be remembered just for their miraculous season, not whatever they play in the next few games. But it is a memory of the future; now, all that matters is to avoid one more series of houses. So when Chicago explodes expectations and Houston falls short of its meetings, none of these last two or three games.

The different regular season experiences of these two clubs make for an interesting aspect of this clash. But that’s just the big picture storyline. There are several points of interest on both sides that I am excited to talk about.
