Zuffa Boxing star Edgar Berlanga has been arrested, charged with 2 counts of battery in Florida

Edgar Berlanga was arrested on October 26 by the Lakeland County, Florida Police Department on felony battery and felony aggravated battery charges stemming from an alleged incident on October 18.

Berlanga appeared in court Tuesday at the Bartow Courthouse, where a judge set his bail at $16,000, according to court records obtained by the Crown. The Nuyorican boxer’s arraignment hearing is at 8:45 am on November 17, when he will hear the charges and enter a formal plea.

Berlanga is charged with first-degree felony battery — touching or striking under Florida Statute Section 784.03 — and second-degree felony aggravated battery under Florida Statute Section 784.045(1A1).

The misdemeanor battery charge carries a maximum sentence of one year in prison. At the same time, the far more serious felony charge could see Berlanga sentenced to up to 15 years in prison.

Berlanga (24-2, 19 KOs) last entered the boxing ring in July at Madison Square Garden’s Infosys Theater in New York. He bounced back from an early knockdown to stop Steven Butler in the 7th round of his super middleweight knockout over Zuffa Boxing 9.

In 2024, he challenged boxing star Saul “Canleo” Alvarez for the WBA, WBC and WBO middleweight titles, losing by unanimous decision.
