Steve Cherundolo names the first US U-23 roster on the road to the 2018 Los Angeles Olympics

The road to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics has been mentioned as Steve Cherundolo’s roster has been named for games against Scotland and Ukraine, and it’s an experienced group of players. Six players on this roster were called up to the United States men’s national team, and four earned caps during the recent September/October international break, while Benjamin Cremaschi was a member of Parma’s 2024 Olympic team and is still eligible to participate in the 2028 edition of the tournament.

Looking at the experience with eight players based abroad and as many on the fringes of the major leagues, it shows just how deep Cherundolo’s talent is at the Olympics during what is an exciting time for US Soccer.

“We are very excited to gather this talented and polished group of athletes together to begin our journey to the 2028 Olympics,” said Cherundolo. “We are keen to work hard, establish our identity and build a strong foundation for what lies ahead. The first international match will be a great opportunity to challenge ourselves, compete and grow together as a team.”

They will begin training camp next to the senior teams at the Arthur M. Blank National Training Center, similar to how the United States women’s national team set up their last camp. Not only does it show the synergy between the two sides, but it also gives both Cherundolo and Mauricio Pochettino the opportunity to oversee each of the team, because when they are next called, considering how the youth team can become a bigger team even between the two squads.

The main camp is just like Cherundolo’s first time with the U-23s, so we’ll get a first look at how the United States youth stacks up under him against solid opponents from around the world. Given the experience that is available to him and how close the competition will be at the Olympics, as the top three players in the 23-man squad can go to the competition, everyone will need to be in the game immediately.
