Ohio State faces its first Big Ten test when Ryan Day and the Buckeyes travel to Iowa City to take on the undefeated Hawkeyes. The Buckeyes (3-1, 1-0 in the Big Ten) come into this game feeling positive about the Hawkeyes — at least before kickoff. Iowa (4-0, 1-0 in the Big Ten) comes into this game on the back of a heart-stopping, last-game play-by-play victory over Michigan. The Wolverines are Ohio State’s unpopular rivals, and the Buckeyes get a hot feeling every time Michigan loses a conference game.

The Buckeyes are known to have a tough time dealing with an opponent that has proven to be opportunistic and tough when the game is on the line. Iowa has swept two opponents but is coming off the next wins against rival Iowa State and the Wolverines.

The Buckeyes let their tough Week 2 game at Texas slip by when they let go of a big lead in the fourth quarter. Day put the blame for that game on himself, and Ohio State’s lack of killer instinct was demonstrated when Julian Sayin, Jeremiah Smith and Bo Jackson had a chance to put the game away.

It will be a party atmosphere at Kinnick Stadium when the Hawkeyes come out of the tunnel, because the home team will have a chance to beat Michigan and Ohio State in back-to-back weeks. However, the Buckeyes have a far more impressive talent than the Wolverines, and their early season loss is no less sloppy when the games can reach their moments.

Ohio State is a far more dynamic offensive team than Iowa, and can dictate the pace if they can take an early lead.

Ohio State certainly knows how to go into a hostile environment and figure out how to play its best game. They may have lost to Texas in the second game of the season, but the Buckeyes dominated the game early and built a 23-3 lead through three quarters.

They have the athletic ability, talent and experience to prevent a late rally this season again. It starts with quarterback Julian Sayin and wide receiver Jeremiah Smith. Both candidates for the Heisman Trophy and who could really hurt either player when it comes to winning the award could take away the votes from each other.

That makes little difference as they prepare for this game. Sayin is having an excellent year with 83 of 115 passes for 1,206 yards with 10 TDs and 1 interception. Smith is the best wide receiver in the country and one of the top wide receivers to ever play at Ohio State. 33 passes for 617 yards with 7 touchdowns, including a 72-yard TD reception against Illinois last Saturday.

The Buckeyes have key players on the offensive line, and the running game includes Jackson and Ja’Kobi Jones. Jackson has rushed for 283 yards while averaging 5.7 yards per carry and Jones has 206 yards and averaged 6.6 yards per carry.

The Hawkeyes will come into this game with a lot of momentum after a 20-19 triumph over Michigan. QB Hank Brown threw a perfect pass to Reece Vander Zee in the end zone on the last play of the game. They silenced a huge crowd at Michigan Stadium and handed the Wolverines their first loss of the season.

The Hawkeyes are one of the top defensive teams in the Big Ten as they allow just 239.8 yards per game. Head coach Kirk Ferentz knows his defense won’t completely shut down Smith, but will try to limit the big plays.

Iowa’s offense came to life in the final stages of a win over the Wolverines, and Brown will try to get the best of Ohio State’s defense. Brown completed 66 of 97 passes for 700 yards with 5 TDs and no interceptions. RB Kamari Mouldon has 284 rushing yards and a nasty 7.3 yards per carry average on 39 rushing attempts.

Ohio State vs

Ohio State has the same goals as it always has. Win the Big Ten title, beat Michigan and win the national championship. To achieve those goals, the tough game can’t get in the way. A loss to Texas means there is very little margin for error and a loss in this game would be fatal as they have a huge game against defending national champion Indiana in two weeks. Iowa will come into Ohio State with the better offense, but Ohio State will win the game. But Iowa rewards its assistants with cover.
