Inter and AC Milan have unveiled new stadium plans ahead of the Derby

On Saturday, AC Milan hosts Inter at the San Siro in the first Derby della Madonnina of the season. It is a clash between the two biggest teams in Europe and the first derby for Portuguese coach Ruben Amorim, who joined AC Milan in the summer after leaving Manchester in January. The two clubs play in the iconic Italian arena, but on Thursday they will unveil plans for a new stadium that will replace the San Siro, which both clubs will now share. The new San Siro will be named Generali Stadium after Italian insurer Generali acquired the naming rights in a deal worth €650 million ($725 million) over 20 years.
The project is a “71,500 seat stadium arranged around one of football’s most iconic atmospheres, setting a new standard for the live fan experience,” according to the clubs. A bold architectural vision by Foster + Partners and MANICA, Sir Norman Foster and David Manica, two architects who previously designed London’s Wembley Stadium. The new arena will feature a distinctive X-fracture structure and a soaring double-curved roof, a concept that will become the next terminus of Milan. The stadium is a “defining investment” by RedBird and Oaktree, owners of AC Milan and Inter respectively, to “strengthen sporting rivalry, unlock future growth and help shape the next era of Italian football”. The two rows of seats create a continuous 360-degree bowl, creating exceptional views and an immersive connection between the fans and the pitch. At each end, the Curves rise as unique, steep support walls, drawn to the playing field with seating inclinations of up to 37 degrees, to enhance both the atmosphere and the visual impact. At the center of the design is a distinctive structural form, whose strong rhythm recalls both the legacy of Italian engineering and the intricate craftsmanship of the Duomo di Milano.
