You made a strong first impression for the USMNT
The US men’s national team entered a new era on a high with a 4-1 win over Peru on Saturday, with 11 players missing, including two of the goals, as the senior team announced their debt to head coach Mauricio Pochettino in the next generation.
The first scorers of the new four-year cycle were Justin Ellis and Julian Hall, who each scored their first goals for the national team against Peru. Elias, one of three newcomers who started from Cavan Sullivan and Peyton Miller, started with Gio Reyna in the fourth minute at the end of the opening game. Peru had an equalizer courtesy of Gianluca Lapadula 11 minutes later, but the USMNT dominated and picked up throughout the second half, especially after Pochettino’s various substitutions around the hour mark. Substitute Mathis Albert won a penalty which Malik Tillman successfully converted as Hall scored to make it 3-1 and then assisted on Sebastian Berhalter’s 90th minute strike to wrap things up.
Pochettino was naturally proud of the performances of his senior players, which was the only international break that allowed him to show his talent without the burden of too much pressure. Saturday’s game will try to strike the first example of balance over the course of a new four-year cycle, mixing in an equal number of experienced players so newcomers can rely on their leadership while also slowly living up to their potential. Second, he was full of praise for the veterans who showed the newcomers the ropes in the first week of creating the support camp. The head coach was hesitant to get too ahead of himself, on the occasion of excitement, praising his own players when asked questions, but never singling out a single player – but he used to honor the group’s questions about one player. His optimism about the future of the USMNT, however, could not always be contained.
- Pochettino: “Look, the language of football players is good for connecting. They don’t need much at the same time, and because they are good, they have quality, they connect so quickly. They only need [a] a few training sessions. If they don’t have quality, it’s difficult. You can practice for one year, and maybe the natural and organic connection never happens. It’s like mass. They have great talent. which is why they connect. Join the good players. I don’t need time.”
