Gassiev is unsure if Fury v Joshua will be for his WBA belt

Murat Gassiev says he now has no idea if he is still the WBA heavyweight champion after Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua are set to fight for his belt.

Gasiev, 32, was upgraded to Super champion in July when the title was vacated by Oleksandr Usyk, who had been the regular holder of the belt since 2025.

Fury and Joshua are due to fight on December 11th in Cardiff and it is claimed that Gassiev’s future is for the title now.

Speaking to ESPN and after arriving at the WBA, Gassiev says he’s still in the dark.

“[The] WBA give me a big surprise about my belt. But in the press conference when AJ and Fury face off, I only see the Ring Magazine belt, no WBA belt,” Gassiev said.

“And now to be honest, I’m not confused about this thing. I don’t know. Fight for the Super belt, another belt, I don’t know.

“I check my email. I don’t have any messages, no papers, but I’m not a manager, I’m a promoter.” [or] lawyer I am a fighter. I do my job, that is.

The WBA recognize their “Super” champion as their full champion, while the “Regular Belt” holder is often the number two contender for the world title.

There are four major world titles in boxing – the WBA “Super”, IBF, WBC and WBO belts.

Gassiev is still listed on the WBA website as the reigning champion, with Fury ranked number two behind American Jarrell Miller and Joshua number three.

Joshua and Fury are two-time world heavyweight champions and had a news launch in London last week.

The heavyweights will meet at the Cardiff Championship Stadium after a decade long effort to bring the British rivals in the ring together.

WBO world champion Daniel Dubois, who has a knockout win over Joshua, says he can’t pick a winner.

“It doesn’t seem like it has the same side to it if it happened years ago,” Dubois said.

“The fire and the edge have fallen. But it will be a great fight regardless.”
