Monterrey battles Tijuana with the Liga MX series on the line for the playoffs

Only two match days remain in the Apertura portion of the Liga MX season as all those chasing Club America, who have 28 points on the first day with a game in hand, can still play. With the most goals scored in the league, America is looking very good, but that will also make their match against fifth place Toluca interesting. Toluca are the reigning champions but, due to a mix of injuries and luck, have seen their squad slip from where they hope to be.

They are healthy now, so it will be a great chance for them to show that they are still among the contenders for the game, but they don’t need only this part. Monterrey are now in a playoff position by the skin of their teeth despite spending what Hugo Cuypers and Diego Rossi brought to the club; the attack was only of medium size, and the defense also struggled. Monterrey are one of the most successful clubs in Liga MX history, so missing out on the playoffs would be a shock, but it is also a real possibility as they face Club Tijuana.

Tijuana teenage phenom Gilberto Mora has struggled with an injury, but this is a very winnable game for the club and one that could push them up to fifth depending on how things shake out. It’s always an interesting race for Liga MX in the playoffs because the season is so short, but it could also sneak up on Monterrey to miss out on the playoffs for the first time since 2016 if things don’t go away.
