New York Rangers goaltender Igor Shesterkin has been released from the team for the season after suffering a lower-body injury in Friday’s loss to the Washington Capitals.
Shesterkin was injured in the second season and had to be helped by ice and did not put any weight on her right leg. Rangers did not reveal exactly what happened to the 30-year-old reteminder.

During a flurry in the Rangers defense, Shesterkin applied his pass straight into the goal post as he tried to replace himself for a save. His leg then unconsciously bent as he fell into a crevice.
“It’s awesome,” Rangers captain JT Miller said afterward. “He’s the pillar of this team. He thinks. … We don’t even know what’s going on, but to see that the game was shot was shaken by all of us. But at the same time, it means that we try to approach the person so that the work is done, especially. [backup Dylan Garand].

Garand, the team’s fourth-round 2020 draft pick, is now the Rangers’ No. 1 is the goalie. He made five career NHL starts and stopped 11 of 12 shots against the Capitals after coming on for Shesterkin.
Shesterkin is in his eighth NHL season, all with the Rangers. He won the Vezina Trophy in 2021-22 as the league’s top goaltender and was also named to the First-Team All-Star that season. This is the second time in eight years, the $92.475 million extension in Aug. 2021 signed.
Through five starts, Shesterkin was 3-1-0 with a .935 power save percentage and was just over a week removed from scoring the first goal in Rangers history.

That wasn’t the only bad news for the Rangers goalie on Saturday. Fullback Joonas Korpisalo, who was already listed as week-to-week with a lower-body injury, will need an additional four weeks as he recovers.
