ATLANTA — Braves right-handed reliever Robert Suarez, who’s working his way back from right elbow inflammation, faced hitters and threw around 15 pitches during a live batting practice session prior to Sunday’s series finale against the Phillies at Truist Park.
Suarez, who has acted as Atlanta’s high-leverage reliever/setup man over a majority of his 31 appearances (0.56 ERA, 32 innings) this season, has not pitched since June 19 before going on the 15-day injured list on June 26.
Suarez threw 15 pitches and did some PFP work on the mound on Sunday.
“I’m mostly working on rhythm,” Suarez said through interpreter Franco García. “I just want my body to be in the right sequence, and be around the zone and be able to attack hitters. When the time comes, I want to be in that gametime rhythm.”
The Braves (88-61), who entered Sunday with a six-game lead over the Phillies (82-67) in the National League East race, could clinch a playoff berth as early as Monday. Suarez would be a big boost to Atlanta’s relief corps before the end of the regular season as he would be grouped with Raisel Iglesias, Dylan Lee and Didier Fuentes.
“I don’t have an exact date in mind, but I’m feeling really good in the rehab process and I’m hoping to finish strong,” Suarez said.
