In a perfect world, NBA teams would base every decision purely on basketball merit. It rarely works this way. Movement boxes are tricky. Players fight hard to earn their status within the sport. It affects reputation, earning achievements. It’s usually not something they’re willing to sacrifice that someone thinks will make the team slightly better. In order to maintain harmony, teams are often forced to do things they cannot do otherwise.
The Portland Trail Blazers are currently experiencing such a dilemma. Before that offseason, The Blazers traded for Ja Morant. Damian Lillard recovered from a torn Achilles last summer. Last season, Deni Avdija became an All-Star as Portland’s only reliable ball-handler. One author shot quite consistently. Having three, at least in the context of injury, is too many. However, in his availability for training camp on Tuesday, Lillard said he expects Avdija and Morant to start this season.
This seems to be the news for first-year coach Micah Nori, who stated that he does not yet know who will start and, according to The Athletic, said that Lillard and Morant will gradually do little together. What is happening at the root. Avdija, as the youngest and best player at the time, will be starting.
The question is who should be next to him, and who? basketball Lillard and Morant are almost certainly not the answer. The NBA lineup represents the worst defensive backcourt by far. The handlers in Avdija put two balls outside the ball, starting the movement of the line changes its impact. Morant’s poor directing alone is still a narrow area for him. These are the concerns that probably arose when the Blazers were there of Morant to begin tradebut that ship sailed.
He is in need of a hospital now, and he needs the most out of the garden.
Why Ja Morant come to the bench
The answer is clear on paper. They should come off the bench for the Blazers.
Lillard, at least the theoretically healthy version of him, represents the ideal balance between what the Blazers lacked last season and what they have this season. Avdija badly needs someone to share the burden of creating shots. Lillard’s shooting makes it easier for Avdija to handle the ball, but his pick-and-roll excellence opens doors for Avdija that were closed last season. If sharing nothing else will help that burden, after a year spent on defense he will return all of his offensive energy.
The power of the defensive line version of Avdija, Donovan Clingan, Toumani Camara and high-level guards like Jrue Holidays, is enough to make up for Lillard’s known shortcomings on that end of the floor. Morant raises to seat units rather than time-sharers to have starters.

The danger of acquiring a player like Morant is that his role in the roster depends mainly on the creator’s shot at the star level. His poor shooting and defenses simply don’t stack up well. Even if you assume he can regain his former form, the whole point is to give him the ball as much as possible and generate offense. He’s just not worth much when he’s doing something else. However, on a team with Avdija and Lillard (not to mention extension-eligible Scoot Henderson and Shaedon Sharpe when he finally returns), he just isn’t as valuable as the Memphis Grizzlies team built around him.
Bringing Morant off the bench allows him to increase the number of minutes in which he does what he does best, even if it means playing fewer total minutes. That’s the version of this team that makes the most sense. There may not be one Morant and his teammates are most excited to receive.
A challenge to navigate in first year coach Micah Nori
A few 27-year-old former All-Stars always seem to enjoy the idea of coming off the bench, after all. It’s been less than a year since Morant’s public spat with Grizzlies coach Tuomas Iisalo, and their issues are based more on Iisalo’s unconventional rotation patterns than anything else. Morant still started every game he played for Eisalo last season. But he came only twice in the race, and was followed by an injury in his power. With max money now, Morant has only two years left in the business. A move to the bench might make more sense for the team, but even if it succeeds, the backups will simply have to live off a different salary than the starters.
Everyone knows this. “What we don’t want is because Jrue doesn’t care about starting, saying, “Well, Jrue will handle it very well, don’t start him,” he said. His expectation, now Lillard and Morant start together in the preseason and see how he plays. If Morant comes off that bench, Nori recognized the potential results. “From the outside, I think, he’s going to treat her great,” Nori said. “Inside… I don’t know.”
The nature of this is to be determined in court.
That often happens in these situations, with Russell Westbrook being a clear example. Darvin Westbrook started three games for the Los Angeles Lakers in the 2022-23 season – all losses – before pulling the plug and moving him to the bench. Ty Lue joined Westbrook’s partnership with the recently acquired James Harden for the Los Angeles Clippers. They started five games together, lost them all, then won twenty-four games with Westbrook off the bench.
Of course, the Lakers have already had a year of testing that hasn’t worked for Westbrook starting. Lue, as a championship-winning coach, had the cachet that other coaches couldn’t decide. And by that point, Westbrook had already moved on with the Lakers and was nearing the end of his hall of fame career. They die much younger. He was more recent to the team than Westbrook was with the Clippers.
And Nori, not Luke This rookie head coach balances a number of competing priorities: how best to deploy players, how to keep them bought, how to manage a front office that probably doesn’t think it’s getting $40 million players coming off the bench, and inevitably handling that thing he was effectively contracted for one year. He said it didn’t affect his athletic outlook, but that was easy to say in October. Things become more difficult if the season starts badly.
These are some of the difficult decisions to make as coaches. Whether it’s now or later, maybe the Blazers will finally have Morant come off the bench. How effectively they do this will determine how successful their season will be.
