Video: Jose Aldo escapes a sickle heel kick, ending in a draw with Marlon Vera

The submission-only fight between Jose Aldo and Marlon Vera on Sunday night in Quito, Ecuador ended after neither MMA veteran managed to reach the finish line for 10 minutes.

A local star returning to his home country of Ecuador for his first competition in the country since 2012, Vera scored a try in the first five minutes as he stood in the corner of the Brazilians, denying them every chance. Vera called Aldo to the center of the ring then, and decided to pull the UFC champion out of the guard. The only real threat in the match came when Vera went for a hook to the heel, but Aldo dodged it.

The co-main event of the IRCA first pitted former UFC bantamweight champion and current RAF title holder Colby Covington against MMA fighter Mayton Perea in a submission-only match, but “Chaos” was replaced at the 11th hour by Juan Albarello.

Hype didn’t show why Covington didn’t enter the ring.

Perea, who signed a deal with the UFC in September after a 45-second knockout Dana White’s Contender Seriesand struck at the foot of the American in just over two minutes.
