Is Jaedyn Shaw the one thing holding Gotham FC’s season together? While this may seem like an odd question, the team that was en route to winning the NWSL title for the most points in the regular season, Gotham State, has been pretty odd. As Gotham prepares to travel on Saturday to face the Washington Spirit, it’s worth looking at the credentials of the shield with three games left in the regular season.
Unfortunately, there is a chance that we could answer this question in a fight. Shaw left the United States U-23 international duty with a minor injury and is currently considered at this stage. When asked about his availability for this top-of-the-menu clash, Gotham FC head coach Juan Carlos Amoros simply said, “Wait and see.”
Gotham conceded the fewest goals in the league while also scoring the 12th-most goals of any team. They have the second best goal difference because of their defensive play, but when you look at the deeper numbers, they aren’t exactly the best team in the league; The San Diego Wave is likely. By the numbers, the chasing team has better goal difference and expected goal difference.

Of course, the asset is played with grass and not spreadsheets, but this is important to note, with the bow around the corner. That xG underperformance on the offensive side of the ball is something that could come back to bite this team, as of the top five scorers this season, four are significantly increasing their xG. Ester Gonzalez may no longer be with the team, but he was close to hitting his expected numbers with six goals from xG 7.85. Sam Kerr has four goals from 9.58 xG, Rosa Lavelle has four from 6.26 xG, Jordynn Dudley has four from 5.76 xG, followed by Shaw.

While it may not be a surprise to see Shaw in the United States’ latest United States national team heading to Spain, Emma Hayes made the point that Shaw wanted to meet with the U-23s in minutes rather than come onto the bench, given the national team’s depth wings. It is understandable, but Gotham Shaw needs to continue to perform at this level, or the attack that is already in his work at the time of the crat.

Fortunately, there’s no position that Shaw can’t take a shot from or an area of the pitch that he can’t score from. Whether it’s cutting from the inside of the wing, taking the head or popping up out of the box, you’ve got it covered. And with so many other stars on this Gotham team, other NWSL sides can’t focus on removing Shaw, because then someone will pay them.
Despite the inefficiency in the attack, the clubs defense makes this part strong, even if it is no longer a true super team that Gotham was trying to build in New Jersey. That may be the best, to win the NWSL championship, the sides are well rounded and have more ways to create danger, which Gotham has.
That may be enough to win the championship, but if Shaw’s team can limit the shots, there are fair questions about what Gotham is going to do next. Facing the third spirit of Washington will prove to be good in this matter, but they are more of Gotham’s defense than Gotham’s attack. But in order to win the championship, we will probably need to go through the Spirit anyway, and with the last set in the Audi Field, this is a good preparation, making Saturday’s clash, watchable TV.
