Australia ‘fixed’ on Herrington’s development

When Hull City announced the signing of 18-year-old Australian defender Luke Herrington from Colorado Rapids, the news was perhaps overshadowed by the arrival of record signing Nobel Mendy, who joined the Tigers on the same day.

But Herrington’s start to life with Hull City, three starts in seven appearances, has lifted him as one of the key recruits of the summer brought in Sergej Jakirovic.

Alex O’Neill of Hull City’s Australian supporters club told BBC Radio Humberside of the impact Herrington, now 19, had on the descent.

“Everyone is crazy about Luke Herrington. Everyone is fixated on him. I was in the pub for the Manchester United game and everyone was excited to see how he did in the Premier League,” said O’Neill.

“He has such a big future ahead of him. There is another level of expectation and another level of hype and excitement with him in the Premier League with Hull City.

“As much as I love watching him play for City, I just can’t believe he’s going to go to the majors. He’s such a player who’s got huge potential.”

Herrington became Australia’s youngest player to start a game at this summer’s World Cup, and represented the Socceroos during the international break against Brazil.
