A chick from the early crop of Arabian Lions stole the show at the Fasig-Tipton California Fall Yearlings sale in Pomona on Wednesday afternoon for $525,000 (video).
The high priced chicken was purchased by MWG Enterprises LLC, Michael McCarthy, agent. Barton Thoroughbreds gave the sale a hip topper of 202. From the first crop of Grade 1 Woody Stephens Stakes winning Arabian lion (Justify), the colt was bred in California by the efforts of Richard Barton. The chestnut yearling is a half-brother to five-year-old winners of the same class from the stake-placed Empire Maker Mare Imperial Pippin. Most prominent among them are half-siblings of three-time stakes winner Pushiness (Kantharos). Hip 202 hails from the immediate family of California Stout and Grade 1 winner Hidden Heat.

The record sale for California Fall Yearlings was previously set at $350,000 for an American Pharoah filly in 2021. They have held a continuous sale since 2019. While the race horses have been supplied in 2023 and 2024, the highest bids have been yearlings each year.

The Uncle Mo filly (hip 62) sold for $300,000 to Mike Repole, Michael McCarthy, agent, from the Havens Bloodstock Agency, agent for Fairview LLC. The filly is from her sire’s last crop out of the multiple stakes winning mare Twisted Humour, from the family’s Grade 1 winner Fionn. The Hip 62 was created by Thomas W. Bachman in California.
A Hard Spun filly (hips 251) sold for $300,000 to IJJ Racing from the consignment of Havens Bloodstock Agency, agent. A brown or brown bay filly out of Misso Segura, an unraced full sister to Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf winner Constructor. Miss Segura is also a half-sister from the mother of this year’s all-time winning Kentucky Oak. Hip 251 was bred in California by Lee Kleinmaier III.
The City Light colt (116 hips) sold for $245,000 to JPM Bloodstock, acting as an agent for Blinkers of Racing Stables, out of the transmission of Thoroughbreds. Bay chick out of Spun mare Bon Spina Hard Spun winner, of which there are all four race winners, including battle winner Macropus (Dads Caps). Hip 116 was born out of the efforts of Richard Barton in Kentucky.
Overall, 137 yearlings sold for $4,863,7000, a 5% increase over the year, with 143 yearlings sold for $4,617,900. The average was $35,501, second in this sales history only to mid-2021 ($39,173). The median has held steady at $15,000, where it has been for each of the last four sales innovations.
