After a day off for travel on Sunday, the World Series is back tonight, with Game 3 at Tropicana Field as the Brewers host the Rays. Tampa Bay is facing a 2-0 deficit in the Fall Classic, but it just might have former Milwaukee right-handed pitcher Freddy Peralta on the mound. This could be his last start with the club, as he remains a free agent. Tampa Bay is pretty amazing after co-ace Drew Rasmussen blew a 4-0 lead in the first inning in Game 2 on Saturday and it’s 5-4. Rays do not infrequently make kinds of defects in crops and races. They are also just 3-for-20 (.150) with runners in scoring position leading the majors with a .283 average this season.
“The lesson is how clean we can play those guys,” said left fielder Chandler Simpson, who had an error. “They are afraid, and it is necessary to do this.”
Then again, maybe we shouldn’t be surprised, as the Brewers also took a 4-0 lead in Game 4 of the NLCS when the Dodgers finished. They are the fifth team in MLB history to twice overcome a four-run deficit in one game, the first since the Phillies in 2022. Milwaukee has won nine of those games, and seven of those victories have come back. This is a team managed so well by Pat Murphy – maybe the Cubs got the wrong hiring of Craig Council – and they never stopped applying pressure in Game 2.
Milwaukee’s seven-game playoff winning streak is a team record — the longest by any club since Texas’ eight straight in 2023 — and it has surprisingly outscored opponents 15-2 from the seventh inning so far. I certainly don’t want to get swept, and there hasn’t been one in the World Series since the Giants over the Tigers in 2012. The Brewers are looking to become the first club since the LCS became a best-of-7 in 1985 to sweep the LCS and the World Series.
Maybe tonight’s bowl start doesn’t matter for Milwaukee, which has been credited with winning eight of its nine playoff wins. That tied the 2015 Royals for most wins by a reliever in a single season.
Robert Gasser was left on the mound for Game 3. This was his third year in the majors, but his first full campaign, and he was 5-5 with a 3.87 ERA in 21 appearances (20 starts). He didn’t get a decision in his two playoff outings, with a 1.00 ERA over nine innings and allowed just six hits. Gasser never took the Rays in front, although one Tampa Bay guy saw him at catcher Liam Hicks (0-for-2).
The SportsLine Projection model projects Gasser at 5.4 innings. 4.8 strikeouts, 4.4 hits allowed, 1.9 earned runs. He wasn’t as good on the away season, with a 4.36 ERA compared to 3.40 at home.

Back on January 21st, the Brewers traded Peralta to the Mets in what turned out to be insane prospects Jett Williams and Brandon Sproat. Then of course the Mets flipped Peralta to struggling Tampa Bay for pennies on the dollar around the trade.
Peralta has been great since Aug. 26, not allowing more than any one deserved to run in any Excursions. In the playoffs he is 2-0 with a save and a 1.08 ERA in four 16.2 innings appearances. He was the ALCS MVP. Peralta retired the Brewers on August 20th while still with the Mets (second-last outing with them), and went 5.1 over seven innings.
Andrew Vaughn and Cooper Pratt both went to the orchard from Peralta. The model featured him in 5.1 innings, 5.2 strikeouts, 4.8 hits allowed and 2.2 earned runs. In the Trop, Peralta has a 1.45 ERA in 37 1/3 innings over seven starts with Tampa Bay.
What the Rays clearly need to do is involve closer Bryan Baker while still in the series. Baker has converted 35 straight saves and the Rays are 92-0 with eight innings this season. This is the first World Series game at Tropicana Field since Game 2 on Oct. 2008 That connection doesn’t jump out often, but when it does, it’s definitely a home field advantage.
