ACC is based on historical records. Arguably, it was due.
Not that long ago the ACC was a regular in the Final Four entrants and NCAA champions. Fifteen ACC representatives captured national titles between the start of the conference in 1953-54 through UVa’s triumph in ’19. That’s an average of better than once every five years.

Rarely has the modern ACC — post-1979-80, when it added Georgia Tech and grown to eight teams — gone without placing at least one team in the final four. The longest drought came between 2011 and 2014.
This decade, the ACC has been so successful that they are rare. Since the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, the ACC has reached the Final Four four years in a row (2022-2025), yet no one has walked away with the NCAA championship. Excluded last season, including the last four, they rank below their league’s longest-running secular rival, the SEC.
The SEC had 14 men’s NCAA championships in 2025 compared to 4 for the ACC. Last year’s record hit was 10 for the SEC with 8 ACC bids.
Virginia’s most recent top performance in 2019 under Tony Bennett, the Cavaliers’ only national title in three finals appearances (1981 and 1984 under Terry Holland, and 2019).

But for all the blow-by-blow, ACC didn’t fall by the wayside.
In the past 11 seasons in which the NCAA tournament has played – 2020, the 19th year of Covid – the ACC has won three national titles (2015, 2017, 2019) and made 10 final four appearances.
Including 2015, the year Duke won its last five NCAA championships, 23 ACC teams advanced to the finals or beyond. He also won two, UNC in 2017 and UVa in 2019.
ACC has a wide range of internal strength. The program has sent the team to the final five in the past eight years. Ten regional finals (including the Elite Eight) have been reached over the past five years, an average of two per season, with the lead in each of the past three tournaments.

Decorum has led 24 ACC teams to the Sweet 16 or beyond in the eight seasons since Carolina won it all in 2017.
