The AI Engineer
The AI Engineer
Location: Citizens Field – Queens, New York
Summary
The New York Mets are seeking an applied AI engineer to build and ship production-grade AI capabilities that improve decision-making and streamline operations across Baseball Operations. This role sits at the intersection of Baseball Systems (an engineering perspective), Data Engineering, Baseball Analytics, Performance Technology, and modern generative AI. You will develop specific AI-powered applications such as retrieval-augmentation generation (RAG), secure tool/data integration (MCP-style models), and agent services that can support high-level operations and research, while ensuring strong standards for quality, security, privacy, and operational excellence.
This is a hands-on engineering role that can translate ambiguous baseball operations and ambiguous developments into a working program, iterates quickly with pitches, and hard solutions into durable systems used daily by analysts, coaches, scouts and baseball staffs.
NoteThis role will require extensive in-house collaboration and innovation with stakeholders, analysts and engineers. Applicants must be local to NYC (or willing to relocate) and able to travel to the Citi campus regularly. Travel to Spring Training and Partner may also be required.
Essential Offices & Duties
Design, build and maintain AI-powered product experiences that provide intuitive access to information and statistics and services across internal systems.
Develop end-to-end RAG pipelines (ingesting, hunking, embedding, retrieval, generation) with a strong focus on response quality, baseball relevance, analytical accuracy, latency, and cost.
A secure implementation tool and data connections for AI assistants and agents using standardized models (MCP-style), such as secure interaction with internal APIs, data warehouses and services.
Build agent services that can perform multi-level tasks (research, analysis, synthesis, report generation), with clear controls, auditability and human approvals in the loop.
Partner closely with Product, Analytics, Performance Technology, Player Development, and Baseball Operations stakeholders to formulate questions, define success, and deliver measurable impact.
Contribute to shared standards and reusable components so AI capabilities scale across multiple products and teams.
Firm security and privacy practices (access control, data limits, logging and auditing, and secure handling of sensitive data).
Participate in high-availability support expectations that are needed during critical operational times throughout the baseball season and feature releases.

5+ years of software engineering experience, including building and implementing operational tasks.
Demonstrated experience building LLM-powered production applications (prompt/program design, output structure, tool calling, reliability models).
Practical experience with retrieval systems (searching, embeddings, vector databases, sorting, indexing/indexing) and applying them to real workflows.
Strong experience with modern backends and integration of basic features: APIs, SQL distributed systems and cloud infrastructure (GCP/AWS/Azure)
Proficiency in one or more production languages commonly used for AI applications and services (eg Python and/or Typescript)
Access to work that is both highly collaborative and up to scratch, with the ability to rapidly iterate on ambiguity.
