Melvin Council Jr. confused the college basketball world on Saturday night when he took to Instagram to choose a few schools after a few schools to play college basketball next season. The list includes Kentucky, UNC, and Michigan.
But on Sunday, Council instead announced he was returning to the Kansas Jayhawks. He’s another 5-for-5 guy who received a preliminary injunction against the NCAA from a York judge on Tuesday, giving him another year of eligibility.

The plan now heads back to Kansas, where it won the Big 12 last year after transferring from St. Bonaventure. Last season, the Jayhawk started in all 35 games, averaging 12.7 points per game, shooting 39.2% from the field and 30.8% from 3-point range, and adding five rebounds and five assists per contest. He spent time at Wagner College and then at Monroe College in Kansas, where he was extremely successful.
Mark Pope said at Media Day that this group was the number he was “waiting to go to battle with”, so it was odd to throw another name into the mix after Big Blue Madness had already passed. The plan also plays guard, and Pope already has two first-time guards on the roster in Zoom Diallo and Alex Wilkins, as well as Mason Williams and Jerone Morton coming off the bench.
I’m sure it was a way of planning to make the dude feel good for a while, but the schools I mentioned eventually shut down with a bang, telling the media that those schools weren’t even recruiting him.
We’ll see if he actually ends up eligible, but if he can suit up for the Jayhawks, Kentucky will face Chicago in a little more than a month.
