Report: AGASO Martin Chuan Suspended 15 Days After ‘Horse Just Not Responding’

Driver Martin Chuan is serving a 15-day suspension, ending Oct. 11, handed down by Delaware Noble Racing officials; Racing Biz delivers He was also fined $1,000.

Chuan’s suspension began on Sept. 27. “due to a lack of her best effort” she killed Kelsie Shotzberger’s debuting 3-year-old Pipers Song in a maiden competition on Sept. 10. The paper for the race says that Pipers Song “pulled out” and “raced” in 11th place and eventually finished by 31 ¾ lengths. According to the report, Shotzberger filed a complaint about the ride.

“He’s been looking for a horse for a while,” said Chuan’s manager Johannes Weilbacher Racing Biz. “The horse just didn’t respond, like he didn’t want to be there, or run or participate in anything. And that’s basically how he got it around the track safely.”

Pepper’s Song was rerun on Sept. 18. the filly “failed to kick when the leaders left the far turn and hesitated,” according to the Equibase chart, finishing last by 39 ¾ lengths.

Weilbacher said Racing Biz that he tried to appeal the ruling, but was denied because it was not recorded in the papers, as Delaware rules require.

Chuan, 31, is a multiple-level stakes-position player with 289 career victories. He ranked third in the current Delaware Park season as a rider with 37 victories and was the third oldest rider at the meet last year. The Delaware Park meet ends on Oct. 17.
