A stressful First offseason for new owners
New San Diego Padres owners José E. Feliciano and Kwanza Jones have been in ownership of the team for about two months. This offseason won’t be normal in baseball, with a stoppage effort a very real possibility.
The last lockout took place in the 2021 offseason. From November 2 to December 2, 2021, Major League Baseball teams reached the mound, signing players to contracts totaling over $1.9 billion to enter the lockout. Teams were very busy before the lockout.
It remains to be seen if the same attitude will prevail this offseason. Since certain handling can be contentious, it makes sense to include an important player before it goes black. If the parties are waiting for the conclusion of the CBA battle, the time will come soon and the signing of players will be competitive and pressurized.

What are you waiting for Kwanza and Joseph?
The Padres’ new owners sent a letter to season ticket holders shortly after the team’s elimination from the playoffs. He kept his faith in the late Peter Seidler’s legacy as he continued to pursue the World Championship in San Diego.
“We were all IN,” the letter reads in part. Now we mean
“While we felt the sting of this season ending too soon, we also got the championship dream deeper than we’ve come a long time ago,” he wrote later in a letter.

They added, “Your trust deserves more than words, it deserves action. We are committed to earning your trust through the decisions we make and the work we do alongside Padres leadership.”
The key thought could be that they need to say their actions as well as their words. So far their activities are fun to watch. They watched the games, sat in the fans, interacted. They wore team colors, participated in Eucharistic celebrations and shared the means of those celebrations. Their zeal and energy were open and well known.
What are they doing while we all wait to see what happens with the new deal?
In that time between the end of time and the beginning of the tribulation, action is needed to prove to the base that they mean what they say.

I close Ty Gaul to make an announcement
First baseman Ty Gallia has expressed a desire to stay here. He is at the end of his prime, and probably won’t be in the top tier of money. Felicianus and Jones can make a big impression if they direct president of baseball operations AJ Preller to begin negotiations and try to sign France before the Dec. 2 deadline. A trade or free agent signing of a pitcher is also a sign fans are waiting for 2027 and hoping for another playoff run for the Padres.
Both King Michael and Adrian Morejón have big money ahead of them. There is a real possibility that the Padres won’t be able to win their free agent war. If King opts out of his contract with the Padres and Morejón rejects a more likely deal from the Padres, he is almost guaranteed to bid war on the merits.
The Padres have a glaring hole in the starting rotation for 2017
The first two acts of his first offseason as owners should sign France and a starting pitcher or two whenever the 2027 season begins. Those actions will go a long way toward strengthening the Brothers Loyalty’s desire to keep the playoff cycle going. We all need to understand that this is not a normal offseason, but the fan base needs some tangible proof that the 2027 season will not be lost due to labor unrest.

If José and Kwanza Preller are given the power to work something out before the lockout occurs, it means that when the job is done, the Padres will be busy filling out their roster.
Getting ready for Spring Training in 2027 will be an easier job if some work happens early in the offseason. Felicianus and Jones can set the budget and give Preller early success with the program soon after the World Series ends.
