New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman is shaking up the team’s front office after finishing second in the American League East and losing a three-game sweep to the Tampa Bay Rays in the AL division series.
Special assistants Omar Minaya and Brian Sabean, both former MLB GMs, will not have their contracts renewed, the New York Post’s Jon Heyman reported. Each season was conducted before 2023.

Minaya, 67, was the GM of the Montreal Expos from 2002-04 and the New York Mets from 2004-2010. As Cashman’s executive producer, he reportedly played a major role in the Yankees’ 2023 trade for Juan Soto. Minaya also said the team is interested in signing pitcher Max Fried as a free agent, who had been in the San Diego Padres’ front office since he was drafted.
Sabean, 70, began his pre-service career as a scout with the Yankees before joining the San Francisco Giants and eventually becoming the team’s GM and building three World Series championship teams from 2010-2014. His title on his return to the Yankees was the first counselor.
Whether or not Cashman wants to replace Minaya and Sabean with more experienced analytics personnel has yet to be determined. The Yankees also won’t be bringing back longtime scouts Tommy Wilson and Pat Murtaugh, according to the New York Post’s Joel Sherman.

Wilson joined the Yankees in 2004 after finishing his four-year MLB playing career. Murtaugh had been with the team since 2015 and is retiring.
Perhaps indicating where the Yankees will spend their future resources, the Yankees have hired Fran Herrmann as supervisor for global evaluation/player development integration, Sherman reports.
Herrmann, 42, was most recently with the Toronto Blue Jays in scouting, player development and baseball operations. He pitched as a reliever for Philadelphia in four seasons in the majors in Cleveland and Philadelphia.
Despite the front-office turnover, the Yankees have largely maintained the status quo so far in the offseason with Cashman and manager Aaron Boone both returning. Head coach Matt Blake has also been signed to a three-year contract extension.
