USMNT’s Gold Cup journey to look different as Concacaf unveils revamped group stage format

For United States the men’s national team to win the first Concacaf Gold Cup with 2021, will now need to compete with a new format in the 2027 edition. The tournament will run from June 17 through June 11 with major changes coming to the group stage. It will still include only 16 teams, but instead of those teams being split into four groups of four teams, they will now be divided into just two teams of eight. Fifteen of those teams will qualify for the preliminary Gold Cup and join the host nation Saudi Arabia in the tournament

That change has the goal of making the group stage more exciting, not only does it add an extra game due to each team playing four teams instead of three, but it also allows for an opportunity for chaos, as four teams run through to the knockouts from each. While a new game is being added, this will not change how the shooters will look, as they will proceed as usual.

“The Gold Cup is the country’s premier national men’s competition, and we’re really excited about what this new format will bring to the group stage tournament.” said Concacaf president and FIFA president Victor Montagliani. “Our fans want to see the best teams in our region competing against each other, and this format will make more opportunities for those matchups to happen earlier in the competition. At the same time, every competition will be material, with teams having a mixed balance of opponents and competing for a place in the pulseout rounds. We believe that this will make the Gold Cup more competitive and exciting from the very first competition to the end.”

How the matchups are determined is where things get a bit confusing, as the eight teams will be arranged in groups of two teams against each other, with a predetermined fixture matrix, so that each team plays an even schedule of opponents.

This is to prevent it from being a place where two of Concacaf’s strongest sides essentially ensure that the others don’t have a chance to progress, which could lead to more interesting fixtures in the race depending on how it goes.

For the knockouts, nothing changes as things looked, as the four teams from each group will then be placed in one bracket, with the top teams in each group facing off against the bottom teams in the opposite group. There will then be no reseeds as the quarterfinal semifinals will determine the pair on the road to the championship.
