Who is the Best Center Fielder in Baseball?

Who is the best defensive center fielder in baseball this season?

I have a feeling that you are in a hurry to say the most Pete Crow-Armstrong. And this can be understood, given the vibes around his time and also how often his highlights are shown on television, or on the computer screen, or in the social media feed.

But statistically, it is not an easy question to answer. By Defensive Runs Saved, the metric created by Sports Info Solutions (the company Iegi pro from 2018); Ceddanne Rafaela He was the leader of the MLB. PCA comes in third, when Andy Page a little before him.

By MLB measurements, Crow-Armstrong was first and highest, with Rafaela and Page second and third, respectively.

Finally, I asked defensive stalwart Chris Dial, whose Run Effectively Defended (RED) stands in the Sabermetric Index of Defensive Gold Glove voting within the Gold Ballot, which shows his status. Had Pages 1st, PCA 2nd and Rafaela 3rd. Thus, in looking at these three states, each one finished first once, once second, and once third.

The annual awards year 21 will be announced on Thursday, October, and I do not know that we have had many situations in which there is so much opinion on one player and such a cloudy statistical picture has surrounded.

I work for Sports Info Solutions, so from various metrics, I know ours very well. I will give you the land of the laymen.

Pete Crow-Armstrong

The statistical reason for Crow-Armstrong winning the Bible Fielding Award is that his team heads are all different. He brought out all the center fielders in the Range Runs element. It led in Outs Above Average and RED’s component range as well. He made a spectacular show all the time. His outfield jump numbers are the best in MLB.

Crow-Armstrong’s 18 smart runs saved (a component of DRS) are mostly in the middle fielder Harrison Bader even 18 in 2021. That’s the first year we’ve built an outfielder position into our calculation. Was PCA’s range one-of-a-kind? Not necessarily. I think past Fielding br Award winners Kiermaier’s cousin, Cognate Columnand Byron Buxton having good arguments with him.

PCA has such an additional Runs Saved by his arm value (which is inconsistent with other metrics) and I’ve had many Cubs fans share on social media that Defensive Runs Saved is flawed because of this. I feel like it needs an explanation.

Our method for Outfield Arm Runs is kept results driven. Archery, especially those assisted from a distance, are of great value. Holds (plays in which a runner has taken only one base on one or two bases on a double) have an even smaller broken value. Where were you in the outfield when you even carried the ball? You have to throw a guard when you are at a medium height when the field ball is worth more than one at a shorter height.

Crow-Armstrong allowed 52% of the runners against him to advance, which is a percentage that is five points better than the MLB average. But at the same time, he has only five assists, two of which have helped the man with the interception. They are smaller sums than both Rafaela and Pages, which we will get into more in a minute.

One more thing we want to point out is that Crow-Armstrong was drawn below Rafaela and Page in the DRS.

We have a scorekeeping system known as Good Fielding Plays/Defensive Misplays which gets factored into Runs Saved. We believe there are about 30 types of Good Fielding Games and 60 different types of errors and mistakes for which the fielder can get a fraction of the reward or penalty.

A good story, for an outsider, can include things like cutting a button to prevent a ram from turning one into a double. It shows that there is something that is meant to prevent a person from slipping. These tallies are done by our well-trained scouts under a strict set of rules originally designed by Bill James. The rules are meant to make judgments as objective as possible.

Crow-Armstrong lost two runs saved here and cost five runs on a groundout to Page who earned three (Rafaela had none). The most important things in the Crow-Armstrong leder were eight instances of mishandling hits that cost his team either an opportunity to gain or an embarrassing loss, and six instances of wasting a shot after a hit or error or after a sacrifice fly. He had 14 of them joined together. Rafaela had eight. They had four pages. They are the kind of stories you don’t see, or if you do, you remember for a long time. but they think

Crow-Armstrong is not taking anything away from the defense period. If you were to say that he is the author of 2026 supreme, you would be saying that reasonably, but I would not necessarily say that he is right.

Ceddanne Rafaela

The statistical case for Rafaela is that he has the best combination of range and arm value. His range value is a notch below Crow-Armstrong’s and his arm value is a notch below Page’s, but he represents the best combination of the two lines.

Rafaela won the Fielding Bible Award last year, with 20 Runs Saved and Crow-Armstrong had 15. This is the second year in a row which Rafaela has led in Runs Saved, and he did it both times in a similar manner. He makes more plays than expected on fly balls and deep middle then other outsiders, keeps his own on fly balls deep, and gets a good number of Runs saved from the outcome of shots.

As for the latter, against the center of the plowed field this year, it constituted 44% (MLB average, average 57%). He led AL center fielders with eight assists, the third-highest total, and six of them were unassisted (remember, Crow-Armstrong only had two). He has eight assists to match his total from last season. Fielding Run Value doesn’t do as big a number in Rafaela’s arm as DRS, and that’s okay. We find things in different ways.

Beyond those numbers, Statcast’s measurements rank him among the best in both fly balls and center fielder power. I think everyone can agree that he is the best center on that field.

Andy Page

He’s a worthy third-party candidate here and it’s nice that he spent last year’s Game 7 World Series-saving draft on the move. Basically it goes out in a dead heat with Rafaela, a bit ahead of Crow-Armstrong.

I think it’s harder to convince that Pages is better than PCA than it is with Rafaela. The range’s page numbers are good — it’s fifth best in the middle of the Saved Runs, but it’s nowhere near Crow-Armstrong’s. But he makes up for that arm. The base hitter rate against Page was 54%, higher than either Rafaela or Crow-Armstrong. But he has 14 outfield assists, six more than Rafaela and nine more than Crow-Armstrong. Page’s runners attacked, showing a clear divide between his reputation and the other two parties. But it doesn’t always work out for them.

When we talk about helpers and the idea that as many people as possible can be valuable, let’s remember that helping two people has a lot of power. Deletes the network from ET. Be quick enough about them and you can fix the ground in a state like Running Defense Saved pretty quickly.

If you’re wondering who I voted for, I can tell you that I took this vote for three months. I decided for Rafaela, as I put a lot of faith in what our statistics show. If you had decided on Crow-Armstrong (or even Page) you would not have fought him or persuaded him to change his mind. In the end, I hope we can agree that we can attach the title of “great” to all three, even if only one winner is named.
