Of No. 17 Florida Gators could be out of luck again without one of their top weapons when they face No. 3 Georgia Bulldogs on Saturday as sophomore wide receiver Vernell Brown III was demoted to a questionable SEC report Friday.

Brown had been listed as probable on Wednesday and Thursday, hoping to return after missing three games with a knee injury in Florida. The Gators have been without Brown since he suffered an injury in the first half of his September 26 game at Ole Miss. His absence coincided with a decrease in offensive production in Florida. During the team’s 4-0 opening stretch, Brown recorded 17 receptions for 271 yards and four touchdowns, including two scores.

The Gators scored 96 points during their victories over Auburn and the SEC Rebels, but managed just 63 points while going 1-2 in three games without him.

Brown isn’t the only Florida receiver whose availability remains uncertain. Without teammate Bailey Stockton, he was upgraded from doubtful to controversial after appearing to dispute the injury report with his left ankle. Stockton participated in all seven games this season, accumulating 27 receptions for 289 yards and two touchdowns.

Meanwhile, on the positive side, the Gators seem to be trending at quarterback. Aaron Philo and Tramell Jones Jr. both were upgraded from probable on Friday. Philo is expected to start after missing last week’s 27-24 loss to Texas due to a right shoulder injury. Jones filled in that upset, helping Florida beat the Longhorns despite taking too much contact.

The Gators will be without running back Clark and linebacker Jaden Robinson from Saturday’s game. Clark, who rushed for 126 yards and a touchdown against Ole Miss, was sidelined with an ankle injury against South Carolina on Oct. 10. Robinson’s absence gave opportunities to sophomore linebacker Ty Jackson, who finished with two tackles against Texas.
