Former Texas A&M coach named Dallas Renegades coach

Former Texas A&M head coach Kevin Sumlin has another stop in Texas. The Dallas Renegades announced Wednesday that Sumlin will lead the UFL team in 2027.

Sumlin played six seasons in College Station, finishing 51-26 during the Aggies’ first years in the SEC. His debut remains the highlight of that stretch. Texas A&M went 11-2 in 2012, finished inside the top five nationally, and closed the season with a Cotton Bowl victory.

That season gave Aggie fans plenty to celebrate, but Sumlin’s team never reached those heights again. A&M won nine games in 2013 before finishing with eight in each of the last three seasons. His tenure ended in 2017, leaving behind some memorable moments, but also the frustration of not being able to take a step forward.

Since leaving A&M, Sumlin has lined up at both the college and professional levels. Arizona took over in 2018, but that streak ended after three seasons and a 9-20 record. He later served as head coach and general manager of the USFL’s Houston Gamblers in 2022, going 3-7.

Sumlin joined the Maryland staff in 2023 as associate head coach, co-offensive coordinator and tight ends coach before returning to Houston for the 2026 UFL season.

Now he goes to Dallas with some continuity. The UFL is moving Houston’s 2026 roster with Sumlin to the Renegades, giving him familiar players to work with rather than going with an entirely different team. The next opportunity came in another Texas market, more than a decade after his first successful season with the Aggies.
