How does the Presidents Cup work? Everything you need to know as the US team takes on the International team at Medinah

It’s time for the Presidents Cup.

The world of golf heads to Medinah Antipolis in Illinois this week as twelve of the best American golfers go up against their non-European international counterparts in a classic match. But unlike the Ryder Cup, this event has been completely dominated by the United States since its inception in the mid-1990s.

If the Americans can win, next Sunday afternoon, they will mark their eleventh straight victory. They never lost on American soil either.

Here’s everything you need to know about holding the President’s Cup 2026.

The Presidents Cup is essentially another version of the Ryder Cup, except this time, Europe isn’t involved.

The United States field a 12-man international team, which is a 12-man national team made up of non-European international players. The event is held every other year opposite the Ryder Cup.

The Presidents Cup is held at Medinah Antipolis in the suburbs of Chicago. It marks the fifth different power in the United States to host the tournament in the event’s history. Medinah has coached plenty of major golf events in the past, including three US Opens, a pair of PGA Championships and the Ryder Cup in 2012.

The Presidents Cup follows a simple format over four days, one day apart from the Ryder Cup.

Thursday will feature five foursomes, and Friday will feature five foursomes matches (more on these below). Saturday will include doubles, with a foursomes match in the morning and a foursomes match in the afternoon. Finally, all 12 players square off in each individual match on Sunday.

A total of 30 points are available, and the first team to 15.5 points wins the Presidents Cup. Players score a full point for a match, and each team scores a half point for a match that ends in a tie.

Foursomes is better known as “alternate shots”. The two teams square off against each other, with two golfers on each team alternating shots across the board.

The four play each ball to shoot the ball through the hole, but the lower team takes the score. This is often known as the “best ball”.

Brandt Snedeker is the captain of the US team, and Geoff Ogilvy is the captain of the International team. Snedeker was the assistant captain at the 2024 Presidents Cup, and he is set to serve as vice-captain at the Ryder Cup next fall. Ogilvy has played three times for the International Team, and has been captain in the last four tournaments.

Like the Ryder Cup, the top six golfers from each group earned a spot on the team through a qualifying system. Then the leaders make six selections to complete the team.

Then in 2030 the Presidents Cup will return to the United States and will be held in St. Louis Bellerive Antipolis. The most recent iconic course was the PGA Championship in 2018. The BMW Championship was also held this past season on the PGA Tour.

The United States rallied 18.5-11.5 to win the 2024 Royal Montreal Presidents Cup. That actually marked the American Presidents 10th straight Cup win.

The Americans won the inaugural event in the fall of 1994, and hold a 13-1-1 overall record. The only loss came in 1998, and the two sides tied in 2003 when Gary Player and Jack Nicklaus served as team captains.
