Madison, Wis. Twelve of the 15 players on Wisconsin’s roster saw action in Saturday’s 94-71 exhibition victory over UW-Parkside, a private start to the 2026-27 season.
No wonder then Augustine Rapp (race) and custody Joseph Manchester (Season-ending shoulder surgery) He didn’t want to participate, but it was surprisingly light as a freshman LaTrevion Fenderson not a few minutes.
An even bigger surprise was the head coach Greg Gard Fenderson said he wasn’t in the team’s plans at all this season.
One of the top recruits in the state in the 2016 recruiting class, Fenderson will reportedly spend his next season on academics and not dress for games in his first season on the field.
Fenderson, a Racine native, spent last season playing with DME Academy at St. John’s Northwestern in Delafield. Averaged 14 points, six rebounds and two assists per game, similar numbers he averaged in the Under Armor AAU Circle (17/6/2).
A similar situation has occurred in the past in a player using a redshirt to retain a year of eligibility. However, the NCAA rules committee passed a new “five-on-five” model that gives athletes five seasons of competition within five years, essentially eliminating the redshirt and wavers.
That rule allows Fenderson to change his mind at any time and see the floor, much like Zach Kinziger did last year when he made his debut in December.
Wisconsin is still in a healthy state with its guards. I started the Badgers Owen Foxwell at the point of guard; Jack Janicki aiming at the arrow and Eian Elmer wings in the first show with Trey Autry, Jackson Ball, Braeden Carrington, Hayden Jonesand Kinziger on advice.
Carrington is currently eligible as part of a lawsuit against the NCAA after being excluded from the “five-on-five” model after the year’s graduation class.
