Good Fallout Forces PGA Tour to Address Sponsorship Uncertainty Ahead of Texas Return

It has been two months since the Good Golf controversy, but it continues to feel deceptive. The tournament group underwent a significant change after Bonus Bonus Golf left as the title sponsor. Rebranded as the Austin Championship, the event secured Compliance Solutions as the presenting sponsor ahead of its Nov. 12-15 debut at Omni Barton Creek Resort & Spa. The tournament was taken over by a new identity.

I would definitely say the vision and identity of this event [have] changed,” Augustine Championship tournament director Ian Helm told Golfweek.” I think it’s typical of any PGA Tour event. Spouse leadership obviously has a lot to do with it, along with power. Actually, the identity of this event has changed.

“But again, at the end of the day, I think the PGA Tour product is very strong. Regardless, people here are interested in seeing professional golf at the highest level that they can produce and deliver.”

The original idea behind the Good Golf Championship was social media for golf and professional golf. Good Good will serve as title sponsor and host, while Golf Channel will revive its popular series Big Break as Big Break x Good Good. Aspiring golfers, including former Good Pros Brad Dalke and Good Pros like Sean Walsh, will compete in the stages, with the winner earning an exemption into the Championship.

Bonus controversy forces PGA Tour to rethink its championship playbook. Stay tuned for an insider’s analysis of how this represents the future of professional golf.

However, following the Good Fallout in August, the Golf Channel scrapped the entire debut season of Big Break x Good Good, and the eventual winner was denied the PGA Tour’s promised exemption. The Austin Championship, meanwhile, is set to go ahead without a title sponsor this year. That said, given the stature of the PGA Tour, the newest outside sponsor cannot be ruled out.

Although they don’t have much material, tournament director Helm insists they are ready to move on regardless.

“I think we’re prepared to go either way,” he explained. “The PGA Tour has made this event happen, and they’re supporting this event this year and they’re supporting us and the community of Austin. The focus now is on 2026. We’re continuing discussions with sponsors and all the different scenarios.

“There are so many different hypotheticals that come into it. Obviously, the closer it gets, the more difficult it is operationally and logistically to complete deliveries from a marketing perspective, but you can’t control anything.”

Furthermore, Helm expects the PGA Tour 2028 overhaul to be more in favor of those in terms of sponsors.

“As the PGA Tour moves forward with conversations with all these potential prospects, every prospect will have a different budget, a different vision and a different goal for the event,” he said. “Ultimately, where we are and we’re going through changes in form, I think it plays in our favor. It just opens up more possibilities.”

Starting in 2028, the PGA Tour will introduce a new two-tier structure: the Championship Series and the Challenger Series. The top ranking in the season is 15 regular events, along with majors and other tournaments, with 120 fields and purses of at least $20 million. The Challenger Series will have at least 20 events, with 144-player fields and purses starting at $4 million.

Regardless, the upcoming event marks the PGA Tour’s return to Austin three years after the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play departed Austin Antipolis, bringing the new FedEx Cup Fall event to the Fazio Canyons course at the Omni Barton Creek Resort & Spa.

And in case you need a cooler, Bonus Bonus Golf has released a promotion for its co-branded Callaway driver. The video shows Bonus Co-founder Garrett Clark shoving female colleague Alexis Miestowski to the ground as she reached for his golf club, before warning her, “Don’t touch my new driver.”
